A Provider and Protector
The sea has always been the lifeforce behind the Aran Islands and their people—surrounding them, shaping them and challenging them for centuries. Ever-present and powerful, it has been a cornerstone of both day-to-day life as well as survival on the islands.
In ancient times, the sea fed and protected the islanders. During periods of famine, it offered a source of food when the land could not. In times of danger, it acted as a natural defence allowing the islanders to see their enemies from afar. For generations, the fishing industry sustained island life and provided a vital connection to the wider world. For Aran farmers, fishing became a second livelihood, allowing them enough to earn an income and provide for their families.
An Unforgiving Force
Yet the sea’s generosity has always come with risk. Its ever-changing moods and unforgiving storms claiming the lives of loved ones and leaving communities in mourning. Rough weather could isolate the islands for weeks, cutting the islanders off from medical care and supplies, a cruel reminder of how fragile life at the ocean’s edge could be.
The Aran Sweater: Wool Woven to Withstand the Sea
It was from this reality that the Aran sweater emerged. Born from families’ desire to offer those dear to them protection and comfort from the harsh winds and strong Atlantic spray as well as a means to identify them with a distinctive family pattern if the sea ever decided to return that fisherman to shore.
